ATHENS, OHIO (MARCH 11, 2020) – TEDxOhioUniversity has announced that the inaugural TEDxOhioUniversity event has been postponed due to the global coronavirus outbreak. The event was planned for March 23 in Ohio University’s Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. The University is working to secure a new date as well as information regarding refunds for those who are registered to attend. Those details will be shared as soon as possible. Heritage College of Medicine Professor Dr. Mario J. Grijalva, Director of the Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute at Ohio University, will present at #TEDxOhioUniversity. Based on more than two decades of focused research and field work, Grijalva is an internationally recognized expert on the spread of infectious disease and is perhaps the world’s premier expert on Chagas disease, which affects millions of people in South and Central America and has recently spread to the United States and Europe. Dr. Shane Foster owns Athens Eye Care, a three-doctor optometry practice in Athens, Ohio, where he provides comprehensive eye care to residents of Southeastern Ohio and West Virginia. He has a special interest in children’s vision issues and specialty contact lenses. He is passionate about increasing access to eye care for rural Ohioans and educating the public about the important connection between vision and learning. Dr. Foster is deeply involved in the optometric profession, currently serving as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Ohio Optometric Association and as President of the Ohio Optometric Foundation. He has also been appointed to the American Optometric Association New Technology Committee. He is a consultant for companies in the ophthalmic and pharmaceutical industries and is a regional administrator for Vision Source. Locally, Dr. Foster volunteers on the Board of Directors of the Ohio University Credit Union. He resides in Athens with his husband and son.

A 30-year resident of Athens, Colleen Carow is a communications professional, singer-songwriter, actor, foster parent, proud Ohio University alumna, and mother of three. She has led the Russ College of Engineering and Technology’s Office of Communications since 2002. Prior roles include the first director of development communications at Ohio University, where she wrote the proposal for the University’s then-largest gift of $20 million; communications officer for WOUB Public Media, where she produced and anchored live television and radio; and instructor of journalism and English. She also served international computer services giant EDS, now an HP company, in brand management and annual reports, among other corporate communications. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1970 to parents from opposite sides of the tracks, Julia grew up bouncing between Portsmouth, Athens and Cincinnati and attended Ohio University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and realized she was a lesbian woman. After coming out she worked as a patient advocate in an abortion clinic, attended graduate school at Ohio State and went on to become a DJ, drag king, swim coach, adjunct professor and part-time barista. Along the way she discovered Public Health and finally found a way weave together all her passions into one full time gig. Currently she directs the Equitas Health Institute at Equitas Health where she leads LGBTQ+ health education, research and community engagement efforts to improve the health and wellness of LGBTQ+ communities across Ohio and beyond. President of the Sugar Bush Foundation, Hylie Voss, will be joining us at #TEDXOhioUniversity on March 23! Hylie is the president of the Sugar Bush Foundation at Ohio University. The daughter of Sugar Bush founders, Don and Mary Anne Flournoy, she also serves as the Managing Director for Sugarbush Valley Impact Investments, a company that invests in local agriculture and environment-related businesses. Hylie oversees her family’s 400 acre Sugar Bush Farm outside of Athens, and manages 600 acres of pine timber in East Texas.

An Athens County native and graduate of Ohio University, Jenny works as the Executive Director of the Athens CASA/GAL Program and the Regional Director of Southeast Ohio CASA. She has focused her career and volunteer work on supporting youth and families, particularly children in and from foster care, a cause she deeply believes in because of her own lived experiences. Stotts is committed to building community connections that benefit every child and every family. She describes herself simply as mother, wife, daughter, friend, advocate, rotarian and trouble-maker.
We are thrilled that Quinn Alexandria Hunter will join #TEDxOhioUniversity. A sculptor and performance artist who works primarily with hair and the African American female body as material, she completed her MFA at Ohio University. Using hair weave, a material that is culturally, socially, and physically connected to the Black female body to make her objects, she is connecting the Black female labor and pain to a space and time that it is contemporarily being erased. Through making Hunter remembers them and is re-inscribing their labor back into place in the heart of Appalachia where the underground railroad once ran.
