A warm #TEDxOhioUniversity welcome to speaker Julia M. Applegate. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1970 to parents from opposite sides of the tracks, Julia grew up bouncing between Portsmouth, Athens and Cincinnati and attended Ohio University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and realized she was a lesbian woman. After coming out she worked as a patient advocate in an abortion clinic, attended graduate school at Ohio State and went on to become a DJ, drag king, swim coach, adjunct professor and part-time barista. Along the way she discovered Public Health and finally found a way weave together all her passions into one full time gig. Currently she directs the Equitas Health Institute at Equitas Health where she leads LGBTQ+ health education, research and community engagement efforts to improve the health and wellness of LGBTQ+ communities across Ohio and beyond. She is an avid swimmer, biker, cat lover, scooterist and proud Appalachian native. She lives in Columbus with her wife of 18 years, their children Karsten and Solveig and their cat named Bucket. This is her first TEDx talk, and she couldn’t be prouder to deliver it in Athens on the campus of her alma mater.
